National Welding Month and the American Welding Society

In April, we at Central Metal Fabricators celebrate National Welding Month: an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate how important welding is to both our industry and our everyday lives. The American Welding Society (AWS) seeks to promote its importance to the public. AWS is celebrating their Centennial Anniversary this year, and they are marking their 100 years of work and National Welding Month with several interactive, educational events.

Now more than ever it’s important to focus on welding. The welding sector is currently experiencing a skills shortage, and many professional opportunities are available. Not enough young people entering the workforce recognize the potential of a career in the skilled trades, and thus the United States simply doesn’t have enough welders to keep up with demand.

In this blog, we’ll overview what National Welding Month is and its significance, as well as the AWS.

National Welding Month

Every day, skilled welding professionals are hard at work across a spectrum of industries. They help to assemble cars and trucks, work in shipyards, on construction sites, and in scores of other areas—the American economy is fueled by the work of welders. Yet, despite this vital work to fuel the engine of industry, the public at large may not fully realize what it is that welders do or contribute to. April is the month to bring the work of welders into the spotlight. With a storied past, a vibrant present, and a promising future, welding is appreciated this month through education, mentorship, and recognition.

One of the goals of National Welding Month is to educate people about the pressing need for more skilled workers. Analysts predict that within the next three years there will be a deficit of 450,000 skilled welding professionals in the United States. It’s increasingly important for people to realize the opportunities presented through a career in welding. Building interest in this growing industry will not only benefit potential welding professionals, but also supports market growth across industries such as:

  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Manufacturing
  • Construction
  • Oil & Gas
  • Mining
  • Shipbuilding
  • Power Generation
  • Renewable Energy

American Welding Society

The AWS turns 100 years old this year. This non-profit was founded in 1919 with the goal of championing welding and allied joining and cutting processes throughout the world. It supports the advancement of technology, science, and application of the welding profession, and boasts a membership of more than 70,000.

Besides the official membership, AWS offers advanced training, certifications, and professional collaborations. This organization is also a resource for career opportunities and continuing education in welding, such as conferences and professional collaborations.

At Central Metal Fabricators, several of our team are members of AWS, and we have found it to be extremely beneficial to our efforts in learning and continuous improvement.
